Founded in 1903 by students, Hellas Verona’s past has seen big highs and lows. Having first debuted in Serie B in 1929, following a merge with Bentegodi andScaligera, they didn't reach the top flight until the 1957-58 campaign. Their stay lasted just one season and in 1959 they definitely adopted the name HellasVerona AC.
Nine years later, Swedish Coach Nils Liedholm took them back into Serie A, where they remained - bar a relegation to Serie B in 1974 due to a scandal involving President Saverio Garonzi - until 1990.
During that period, Hellas enjoyed the most successful spell in their history. Nine years after reaching their first Coppa Italia Final - a 4-0 defeat to Napoli - they won the 1984-85 Scudetto. Propelled by the goals of Preben Elkjær, the title was secured with a game to spare.
That season was a defining moment and in 1991 there was another, but with different connotations, as financial difficulties forced the club to fold. In 1992, they were reborn as Verona FC, then subsequently Hellas Verona FC in 1995, and flirted between Serie A and Serie B, before being relegated to the latter in 2002.
In 2007, it got worse. After 64 years of playing in the top two leagues, Verona dropped to Serie C1 and, despite averaging crowds of 15,000, flirted with a further relegation. The arrival of Andrea Mandorlini in November 2010, however, changed their fortunes and within three years he had Hellas back in Serie A, with a record-breaking season to mark their 2013-14 return to the top flight.
